$25M Effort to Support Colorado Stream Management Planning

A key factor influencing the successful implementation of Colorado’s statewide water plan will be sufficient funding for stream management plans, or SMPs, an important tool to protect healthy environmental values in the state’s waterways, alongside other more consumptive uses.  The Gates Family Foundation has supported pilot work by the Roaring Fork Conservancy and other watershed partners to develop an SMP for the Crystal River.  This plan will help local stakeholders prioritize projects seeking to balance municipal, agricultural and conservation needs.  The objective is to manage the river for greater resiliency, maintaining and securing its values for all who depend on it.

If adequately funded, the Colorado Water Conservation Board will be better able to support locally-driven collaborative work, ranging from planning to implementation.
