In late 2013 the Foundation’s trustees approved funding for two innovative projects. A challenge grant to Veterans to Farmers (VtF) will certify returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in Closed Environmental Agriculture (CEA). The vertical green house program will equip them with the skills to become successful entrepreneurs in the growing greenhouse market.
The trustees renewed support for Denver’s GrowHaus organization to complete renovations for offices, classrooms and other facilities. Founded in 2009, Growhaus has quickly become a model of success for other organizations in Denver. Indoor community gardens provide food for an on-site market, where fresh local goods are sold on a sliding-scale. Larger hydroponic and aquaponic greenhouse facilities grow commercial produce for local markets through a social enterprise model. Rounding out their program with environmental education and job training courses, Growhaus has built a community-centered model of sustainable urban agriculture practices.
