San Luis hosts Third Annual Congreso de Acequias

Around 100 people gathered for the third annual Congreso de Acequias convened at Centennial School in San Luis, the state's oldest town, on October 11, 2014. Modeled after similar events in northern New Mexico, the Congreso is focused on issues of interest to owners of acequias, irrigation ditches with common property ownership and management structures that are unique to the state, and that represent some of the most "senior" water rights in Colorado. Students, faculty and volunteers associated with the University of Colorado Law School have been working with acequia owners (also known as "parciantes") to formalize historic water rights, to help organizations develop bylaws and, in some cases, to incorporate, to protect this heritage landscape and related farming systems.
