GATES FAMILY FOUNDATION GIVING

In addition to the main Foundation, Gates Family Foundation provides the opportunity for Gates family members to utilize the Foundation’s staff and infrastructure to pursue their own philanthropic interests. The assets of these family funds are managed and invested as part of the Foundation’s total portfolio, but grants are made at the discretion and according to the interests of family members.

Currently, Gates Family Foundation administers eight Gates family funds which allow individuals or groups of family members to use the infrastructure of the Foundation to engage in philanthropy that may have a different topical or geographic focus than the main Foundation:

  • Berenice Gates Hopper Family Fund
  • Brown and Mardi Cannon Family Fund
  • Charles G. and Kathleen G. Cannon Family Fund
  • Gates Frontiers Fund
  • Kit Woodruff Memorial Fund
  • New L Family Fund
  • Poha Fund
  • Robert E. Hopper Family Fund

As of December 31, 2022 these funds had a combined value of almost $270.3 million, or 49% of Gates Family Foundation’s total endowment value. Between 2017 and 2021, family funds collectively distributed an average of $14.53 million per year.

In 2022, grantmaking from Gates family funds was substantially increased to more than $28.2 million, which included the first payment of a five-year, $100 million commitment by the Gates Frontiers Fund to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. This historic commitment – the largest single commitment in the Foundation’s 77-year history – will support the work of the Gates Institute in accelerating cutting edge solutions bioscience, regenerative medicine, and gene therapies to address a host of global health challenges.

NOTE: Applications are not accepted through Gates Family Foundation for these family funds,
and grants are made at the discretion and according to the interests of family members.
