COMMITMENT TO EQUITY
Starting in 2018, the Gates Family Foundation board and staff embarked on a collective journey to promote personal learning and advance organizational commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
These activities took on heightened relevance in 2020 during the racial justice movement that followed the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and similar events in other cities, including the Denver metro area. Our learning and reflection continued and then intersected with our five-year strategic planning activity throughout 2021.
The results have been two products: a Foundation-level Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement adopted by the board (below), and an internal DEI Action Plan describing the ways in which the Foundation will operationalize the values and commitments included in the DEI Statement.
COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Gates Family Foundation strives to embody and promote equity, value diversity, and practice inclusion. We prioritize people and communities that historically have lacked power and experienced barriers to opportunity. Addressing these imbalances is a critical element of solving some of Colorado’s most challenging problems. The Foundation will engage with diverse communities, particularly lowincome residents and communities of color, and partner to create system-level change and expanded access to opportunity so that all Coloradoans can thrive.
