Gates and YouthRoots Develop 'Growing Insight and Voice' Foundation Fellowships for Colorado Youth - Gates Family Foundation
Here is an important announcement. Click here to learn more.

Youth from across Colorado will get the chance to participate in a 15-week, paid fellowship at a philanthropic foundation through the new Growing Insight and Voice (GIV) Fellowship, created by Gates Family Foundation and the nonprofit YouthRoots.

The 2021 GIV Fellowship will run from mid-August through early December, and participation will be primarily remote. Now through March 19, Gates is recruiting other foundations to participate in the program, with a goal of at least six Colorado foundations hosting fellows. Once foundations have committed, Fellow recruitment will begin, and Fellow applications will be due in mid-May.

The GIV Fellowship provides a paid opportunity for youth to learn about the philanthropic sector — including grantmaking processes, impact investing, the nonprofit community, community engagement and more. The opportunity is open to youth ages 18-24 who are passionate about making the world a better place. The fellowship will primarily serve youth from communities underrepresented in the field of philanthropy, or otherwise disadvantaged or marginalized communities.

Youth fellows will split their time between learning about philanthropy as a cohort and being embedded in host foundations to gain hands-on experience in the sector. Through this process, we seek to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Provide opportunities for youth to discover and explore potential careers in the philanthropic and nonprofit fields;
  2. Improve the ability of the philanthropic sector to meet community needs by including youth voice, expertise, and wisdom in foundation strategies; and
  3. Develop a pipeline for youth from communities underrepresented in philanthropy to enter the field.

YouthRoots, which is designing the Fellowship curriculum and will be supporting foundations and Fellows throughout the program, has been engaging Colorado youth in philanthropic decision-making since 2010. YouthRoots currently operates 10-15 youth giving circles annually, in addition to partnering with various community foundations to help run their youth philanthropy programming. The goal of YouthRoots is to make participation in the GIV Fellowship as meaningful, easy, and seamless as possible.
